How do we move to and with our words? What form is best for our stories? Poetry and Movement: Liberating Language with Our Bodies is an exploratory performance project with the multilevel goals of engaging writer/performers/choreographers to connect with their stories in a non-traditional way and draw their audiences in as participants in their work. The project intends to cross boundaries, cross aesthetic lines and integrate several art forms with the intention of redefining ideas of style, form and medium.
Urban Prometheus Poetry/Performance Festival intends to bring poetry to the inner city neighborhoods of Boston, Massachusetts. The vision is to make the art form which is viewed by many as difficult or elitist, accessible to the people. Poets will collaborate with dancers and actors to develop performance pieces of a variety of themes: Pain, love, betrayal, redemption, sexuality, marginalization, poverty, and gender.
The combination of poetry and movement is not a new concept – it is displayed in yoga, and eastern and African dance traditions. How do our bodies translate our language – can we salvage ourselves, our histories by combining the griot story telling tradition with the dance tradition? Urban Prometheus seeks to cross the line separating two art forms and merge them in order to welcome individuals into the folds of storytelling. It is the hope that audiences will be liberated to share their stories and find the form that best holds their narrative.
